Bullying and How Martial Arts Can Help Your Child
Understanding the Issue
Bullying occurs in every educational institution and manifests in various forms, including physical, verbal, and social. This mistreatment can take place face-to-face, online, or through text messaging.
Research indicates that children and adolescents subjected to bullying are more prone to depression, loneliness, and anxiety. They often suffer from low self-esteem and face academic challenges. These individuals typically have an aversion to school, frequently miss classes, and struggle with peer relationships and friendship formation. Additionally, their mental and emotional well-being tends to deteriorate over time.
Numerous studies have examined the prevalence and nature of bullying in New Zealand schools, employing diverse definitions and methodologies. While these studies differ in nature and focus, they all unanimously conclude that bullying is significantly increasing in volume and severity in New Zealand schools.
The Limitations of School Interventions
As parents, our senior instructors have witnessed firsthand that schools' intervention strategies to prevent bullying are limited. Strategies are focused more on defusing situations, with limited repercussions for the bullies, so the cycle continues.
How Can Martial Arts Help Your Child?
We certainly do not advocate using physical force as a response but having it in the tool kit is useful if required. Our approach is to build and strengthen your child's psychological discipline to cope better and manage and de-escalate bullying.
We are the only martial school in Christchurch with an instructor who holds a PhD in Cognitive Decision Processes and a curriculum that centres on honing your child's physical and psychological resilience.
Our Approach to Bullying
Psychologically, bullies are typically insecure; they will prey on those who are scared or give them a reaction. We train your child's discipline and confidence so they can master their reaction to the bully.
We can’t prevent a bully from targeting your child, but we can begin to train your child’s approach, so they become confident and considered in their response. When a bully detects that your child is confident and able to respond with force if force is used on them, they will move on to an easier target.
Our Philosophy
There is a quote (many versions):
“You can’t call yourself peaceful unless you’re capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you aren’t peaceful; you’re harmless. Important distinction.”
At Inception Academy of Martial Arts, our approach is more old-school. We do not promote violence unless necessary to defend ourselves or our family. Still, we must train ourselves and our children so that we/they are never identified as harmless by a potential threat. If they are under threat, they need the psychological composure to de-escalate and escape, and as a last resort, physically defend themselves when no other option is available.
