FAQ
What is Zen Do Kai?
Zen Do Kai is a martial arts system that has been evolving and growing since its inception in 1970. Founded by Bob Jones when he opened his first martial arts club, it was originally intended to meet the needs of those working within the security industry. However, as demand for their services increased due to providing specialised bodyguard training for international artists touring Australia, Zen Do Kai grew beyond expectation.
In 1984, further modifications were made to develop practical fighting techniques that could be applied immediately; then, at the beginning of 1990, Muay Thai Boxing principles and techniques were introduced into classes, creating an even more dynamic system.
Why Zen Do Kai?
As a true freestyle system, we can incorporate other martial arts training into our classes. While we follow a very strict core curriculum, one of the key principles of Zen Do Kai is that we are free to add elements that work from other systems into our club. We aim to use what works and expose our students to as many techniques and systems as possible. Some kids will naturally gravitate to striking; others will gravitate to grappling and restraints. While students need to have a knowledge of all aspects of our training, we always encourage them to play to their strengths and follow what they have instinctive proficiency for.
What is your belt ranking system?
Our Kyu (colour) ranks are white, yellow, orange, blue, green, and brown. We then progress into ten Dan ranks of black belt. The journey to a black belt typically takes a dedicated student approximately five years.
Do you use younger instructors?
Yes, however, it is always under the supervision of senior adult instructors. As children progress through their ranks and head towards the higher Kyu (colour belt ranks), they will be invited to start instructing younger or more inexperienced students. This is an essential path of growth for the higher ranks, learning the selflessness of imparting their knowledge and inspiring the lower rank students of the skills they can attain if they persevere. Our junior instructors will usually have at least 4 years’ experience.
Do I need any experience to join Inception Academy?
No, you don't need any prior experience to take a class. IAMA classes are designed for beginners and experienced students alike. Whether you're just getting started or have some martial arts background, there is something for everyone.
Are parents allowed to watch their children's classes?
Absolutely! In fact, parents are encouraged to watch their children’s martial arts classes. Watching your child in class is the best way to stay involved and show support for their training. It also allows you to get an up-close look at how your child is progressing and which areas need improvement.
What facilities are available at the Inception Academy Halswell location?
