Quick answers

Quick answers

The fastest way in. Read these first, then dive into the detail below.

What age can children start martial arts in Christchurch?
Children can start at IAMA from age 4 in the Juniors class. Younger Juniors focus on coordination, listening, and game-based skill development before progressing to striking and grappling content in older age groups.
How often do children train?
Each membership covers two classes per week, on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Most children train twice weekly, which is the cadence the curriculum is built around.
Is martial arts safe for young children?
The Junior curriculum is built around safety. Younger children focus on movement skill, listening, and basic stances. Sparring and contact training do not begin in earnest until the Intermediate group, with appropriate protective equipment and full instructor supervision.
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes. The first four weeks at IAMA are free with no obligation. Book through the website and your child attends regular classes alongside enrolled students.

Programme features

Built into every class, every belt level, every interaction

Age-grouped classes

Three classes by age: Juniors 4-7, Intermediates 8-12, Seniors 13+. Each one is structured for the developmental stage of its students, not a watered-down adult class.

PhD-led mental development

Every belt level is mapped to one of 12 character values: calmness, awareness, perseverance, self-efficacy, self-regulation, respect, integrity, courage, humility, discipline, compassion, altruism.

Eight black belt instructors

100+ years of combined Zen Do Kai experience on the floor. Children train with the same coaching team week after week.

Halswell location

Te Hapua: Halswell Centre, 341 Halswell Road. Free parking, modern community facility, easy drop-off.

Free 4-week trial

First four weeks are free with no obligation. Bring nothing but a water bottle and comfortable clothing.

Genuine progression

Belt grading through BJMA, the same federation that produced the system. Not a participation pathway. A genuine martial art measured against an external standard.

What we offer

Inside the curriculum

Children at IAMA train the full BJMA Zen Do Kai Freestyle curriculum, age-appropriately. Junior students focus on coordination, listening, and the foundational values of Calmness and Awareness. Intermediates progress into striking combinations, grappling fundamentals, controlled sparring, and self-regulation. Seniors train the full curriculum at adult intensity. Across every class group the IAMA values framework runs in parallel with the technical curriculum, mapped to belt rank and reinforced by every instructor in every session.
