Terms and Conditions
Last updated: April 2026
1. Membership and Fees
Membership at Inception Academy of Martial Arts is on a monthly basis. Fees are due at the start of each calendar month. Current fee schedules are published on the Pricing page and are subject to change with 30 days written notice.
Monthly fees cover two training sessions per week (Monday and Thursday) for the enrolled class group. Fees do not cover gradings, uniforms, or BJMA registration, which are charged separately where applicable.
Payment is to be made via the method agreed at enrolment. Late or missed payments may result in suspension of training privileges until the account is brought current.
2. Assumption of Risk
Martial arts training is a physical activity that involves contact, movement, and techniques that carry an inherent risk of injury. By enrolling at Inception Academy of Martial Arts, members and their guardians acknowledge and accept this inherent risk.
Inception Academy of Martial Arts takes all reasonable precautions to minimise risk, including qualified instruction, appropriate warm-up and cool-down, and supervision at all times. However, no physical activity is entirely without risk and the academy cannot guarantee that injuries will not occur.
Members participate in all activities at their own risk. Parents and guardians of junior members accept this risk on behalf of their children by completing the enrolment process.
3. Medical Disclosure
Members are required to disclose any medical conditions, injuries, or physical limitations that may affect their ability to train safely at the time of enrolment and whenever a new condition arises during membership.
Instructors must be informed before a session begins if a student has an injury or condition that requires modified training. Failure to disclose relevant medical information that results in harm releases Inception Academy of Martial Arts from liability in relation to that harm.
Where a medical clearance is required before a student can safely participate, the academy reserves the right to request written confirmation from a registered health professional.
4. Photography and Media Consent
Inception Academy of Martial Arts may photograph and video record class sessions, gradings, and events for use in promotional and educational materials including on the club website, social media channels, and printed materials.
By enrolling, members and their guardians consent to this photography and use unless they have opted out in writing at the time of enrolment. Opt-out requests can be submitted at any time and will be honoured from that point forward. Historical images already published cannot be retroactively removed from all channels but will not be used in new materials.
5. Code of Conduct
All members are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the values of Inception Academy of Martial Arts: Calmness, Awareness, Perseverance, Self-efficacy, Self-regulation, Respect, Integrity, Courage, Humility, Discipline, Compassion, and Altruism.
Behaviour that is disrespectful, aggressive outside of sanctioned training, or contrary to the spirit of these values may result in a formal warning, suspension, or termination of membership at the discretion of club management.
This code of conduct applies on the training floor, in the venue, and in any context where a member is representing or associated with Inception Academy of Martial Arts.
6. Cancellation Policy
Members wishing to cancel their membership must provide a minimum of 14 days written notice before the next billing date. Cancellations received with less than 14 days notice may result in a final monthly fee being charged.
Inception Academy of Martial Arts reserves the right to cancel or modify class schedules with reasonable notice. Where a class is cancelled by the academy, an alternative session or credit will be offered where practicable.
Fees are non-refundable for classes missed by the member except where the academy has cancelled the session.
7. Privacy
Personal information collected at enrolment, including names, contact details, and medical information, is stored securely and used only for the purposes of administering membership, communicating about classes and events, and ensuring the safety of all students.
Personal data is not sold, shared with, or disclosed to any third party except where required by law or where necessary for the direct operation of the club (for example, BJMA grading registration).
Members may request access to, or deletion of, their personal data at any time by contacting the club in writing. Requests will be processed in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
8. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by New Zealand law, Inception Academy of Martial Arts and its instructors accept no liability for loss, damage, or injury arising from participation in training activities, except where caused by the negligence of the academy or its representatives.
Members are responsible for the security of their personal belongings while at the venue. The academy does not accept liability for theft or damage to personal property on the premises.
These terms do not limit any rights members have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or other applicable New Zealand legislation.
9. Free Trial Classes
Free trial classes are offered at no cost and with no obligation to join. Participants in free trial classes are subject to the same Assumption of Risk and Medical Disclosure terms as enrolled members (sections 2 and 3 above) for the duration of the trial session.
Photography and media consent (section 4) does not automatically apply to trial participants. Instructors will ask separately if trial participants are happy to be photographed.
10. Changes to These Terms
Inception Academy of Martial Arts reserves the right to update these terms at any time. Members will be notified of material changes with at least 14 days notice before the changes take effect. Continued membership after notice constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
The current version of these terms is always published at https://www.inceptionacademy.co.nz/terms.
These terms apply to all members of Inception Academy of Martial Arts, trading at Te Hapua: Halswell Centre, 341 Halswell Road, Halswell, Christchurch 8025, New Zealand.
